Winterthur FC Barcelona were proclaimed champions of the Copa del Rey in Málaga after beating Unicaja, DKV Joventut and Real Madrid in the competition. It was the first time the Blaugrana had one the pot since 2003.
In the first game in the tournament, Barça were drawn against the hosts, Unicaja, and they started
strongly with a 62-77 victory. In the semi-finals the Catalan outfit took on DKV Joventut and a
forceful encounter saw them progress to the final. It was thanks to an extraordinay third period,
which Barça won 11-28, that they ended up with a 14-point winning margin of 70-84.
Real Madrid, the league leaders at the time, awaited in the final itself and thanks to a
great defence, Barça won the opening quarter 5-21 to take charge of proceedings. It was a lead that
the Madrid found insurmountable and the Blaugrana continued to dominate throughout as they recorded
a 53-69 win to hand them the Copa del Rey for the 13th time.
Jordi Trias was named as the MVP of the tournament. His average record of a
14.7 points per game, 6.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and a 23.7 valuation per game made him the key
player for Barça. The Blaugrana were also crowned as the team to have won all three games by record
margins. No side had ever won the trio of matches by ten points or more before, and their 16-point
winning margin in the final against Madrid was a new record.
Akasvayu Girona, Gran Canaria, Caja San Fernando and TAU Cerámica also took part in the
competition.
