David Andersen joins FC Barcelona for the 2008/09 season from CSKA Moscow. He is the first Australian player in the club’s history.
After starting out at the Australian Institute of Sports, Andersen signed for the Wollongong
Hawks in 1998/99 in the Australian NBL League. In 1999/2000 he went to Europe to join Virtus
Pallacanestro Bologna. In 2003/04 he went to Montespachi Siena in Italy.
In 2004/05 he went to Russia to join CSKA Moscow. Here he became widely seen as one of the
best centres in Europe.
He has played for Australia at all levels. In 1998 he played in the under-18 World Cup and
then played for the under-22s. In 2004 he played at the Athens Olympics where Australia finished
ninth. He is also set to play at Beijing 2008.
PROFILE
Andersen is a 2.12 metre tall Australian centre with a Danish passport which means he can
play in Europe without taking a non-European player spot.
He is a very physical player who can intimidate in defence. Fast, coordinated and tough, he
is a key player in attack both under the hoop and shooting from afar – in 2007/08 he led the
Euroleague three-pointer percentage figures.
