FC Barcelona went out to Getafe in one of the most amazing cup semi finals in the history of the tournament.
They had reached the final four after beating Badalona, Alavés and Zaragoza in the previous rounds.
It all started with a
2-1
victory at neighbouring Badalona, rounded off with a
4-0
win at the Camp Nou. Into the last sixteen, and Barça won both games against their Basque
rivals, Alavés,
2-0
at Mendizorroza and
3-2
at the Camp Nou. It was old cup rivals Zaragoza in the quarters, and FC Barcelona had to
bounce back from
1-0
home defeat to win
2-1
in the Aragonese capital and seal their passage on the away goals rule.
Things could not have got off to a better start in the semi final, with a tremendous
5-2
display against Getafe at the Camp Nou with Messi scoring perhaps the most spectacular
goal of the entire Spanish season. It looked like the return leg in Madrid was going to be nothing
more than a formality, but in their worst performance of the season, Barça
collapsed
against a dazzling performance by Bernd Schuster’s side, who cancelled out the
three-goal deficit and then added one more to reach the final 6-5 on aggregate.
