Barça finished third in the League behind Madrid and Villarreal. Poor form away from the Camp Nou was decisive, although the side was still in with a shout until April.
Poor away form was made up for by good home performances. In 2007 the team won eight of their nine
home fixtures, with the loss to Madrid being the first defeat, but could only win two of their
first eight away matches.
Obvious improvement
Defeat at the hands of their traditional rivals (
0-1
) meant that Barça were seven points behind Schuster’s side over the Christmas break.
This gap, which would become nine points, was cut to just two thanks to a magnificent start to the
year in which Barça were undefeated in January and February.
Turning point
Barça even became virtual leaders on matchday 26 at Vicente Calderón, but just like the home
game with Madrid the match proved to be a turning point, only this time for the worse. The side
would only get three more victories in their remaining 13 League matches.
Disappointment at Bernabéu
In the home stretch of the season Barça was also knocked off second spot by Villarreal. The
day after a painful defeat away at champions Real Madrid on matchday 36 by 4-1, it was announced
that Rijkaard would be leaving the club at the end of the season.
