Barça had the best attack in the Asobal League. The side coached by Manolo Cadenas reached the end of the season with the all-time record in the competition, 1,021 goals in a season, and Iker Romero was the top scorer.
Although they finished second in the table, the Barça handball team broke the tournament scoring
record, which was previously in the hands of Octavio Pilotes Posada who scored 1,010 in 1994/95.
This was also the first season that the top scorer was a Barça player. Iker Romero, with 197 goals,
took the honour. The league champions, Ciudad Real, scored 57 goals less.
Big scores
This was a season of big wins. In 30 games, Barça scored more than 30 no fewer than 20 times.
In five games they broke the 40 barrier. Barça started it all with a massive win against Teucro
(41-31). Cadenas’ side had issued an early warning regarding their goalscoring power, as this
was not the first time they would be scoring big. Their biggest away win, in game 13, was at
Algesires (27-44).
Powerful counter attack
One of the
side’s strong points was counter attacking. Barça scored more goals that way than any other
team in the league, 211, and the top scoring counter attacker was Barça’s Juanín García, with
55. This was some improvement on last season, when they managed 168 goals on the counter. One
reason for so many goals scored in that manner was Barça’s ability to steal. With 168 steals,
Barça toped the Asobal rankings (Ciudad Real had 121), which shows how in this game, your first
line of attack is always your defence.
