Alberto Borregán began playing roller hockey at the tender age of four years, following in a family tradition, as all of his brothers played the game.
His first team was Cerdanyola HC, where he learnt the basics. In 1989, aged twelve, he moved to
Unió Esportiva de Horta, and stayed at that club until 1994.
That year he made the big move to FC Barcelona, where he has stayed ever since, and for whom
he made his full debut aged just 16, at the same time that Carlos Figueroa took over as manager.
At our club, 'Beto' has shown us the very best of his game, and is a regular feature of
end-of-season All Star teams. He has also been part of one of the most successful periods in the
club's history, and his honours list makes for impressive reading.
Alberto has also played a decisive role in the Spanish national team, and at youth level
picked up several Nations Cups and European Championships. In the full international side, after
collecting a bronze medal at Wuppertal in 1997 and a silver at Reus 1999, he won the gold for Spain
at the 2001 World Cup in San Juan against Argentina, where he captained the side. He also won the
European Cup by beating Porto at their home pavilion. A year before that World Cup, in 2000, he had
won the European title by beating Portugal in the Swiss town of Wimmis. In the 2002 championship,
played in Florence, with 'Beto' as captain, Spain retained its title by defeating Portugal.
CHARACTERISTICS
'Beto' is a massive star, famous for his great skill and defensive ability, and is one of the best forwards in the modern game. He is a highly developed player and can carry the weight of the team and lead the play, while also knowing all about teamwork and sacrificing himself for the benefit of the team. He is greatly valued for his psychological influence and intelligence. The way he changes pace and masters the stick make him a true pleasure to watch. He moves the ball around and takes on defenders headfirst. His change of pace and domination of the stick are those of a magician. He moves the ball whatever way he wants to and is always first when it comes to attacking opposition defences. Without any doubt, he is a real predator in the box. In spite of his youth, Alberto Borregán is main offensive player for his team and the Spanish national team.
