The president of FC Barcelona assured reporters that the basketball section is looking to add to its success in the Kings Cup. He also dedicated the triumph in Bilbao to Barça fans everywhere.
Speaking after the final to Barça TV, Joan Laporta emphasized: “The team is getting some
great results. They’re hungry for victories. We have to recognize the work done by Josep
Cubells, the board member responsible for the basketball section, Xavi Pascual the head coach and
Joan Creus, out technical secretary”.
The team’s qualities
Joan Laporta also praised the team’s response on court and to the
fans: “Apart from the sporting success, the basketball team have tremendous quality on a
sporting, human and personal level. This is another trophy the team has accumulated. Regal Barça
has a great present and a great future”.
Cubells, a happy man
The man in charge of the basketball section, and secretary to the Board,
Josep Cubells, was delighted: “I’m very happy about the title and about the number of
fans who supported the team”. More than 1,500 Barça fans made the trip to Bilbao to watch
Barça’s historic win over Real Madrid.
However, Cubells believes the victory was not handed to Barça on a plate: “We had tight
games in the quarter and semi finals. Being favourites doesn’t give you the title and the
whole team worked hard against strong opponents”.
The view from the technical secretary
Technical secretary Joan Creus gave a rather more technical analysis of
the victory: “We had more difficulties in the quarter and semi-finals against Cajasol and
Valencia, but today we played our best basketball”.
Although Regal Barça dominated most of the game, Creus admitted: “During the opening
quarter of an hour they dominated some situations but we adjusted various aspects of our game and
from the second quarter we dominated the game”.
According to Joan Creus: “We really wanted the Cup. The limit of this team is in our
daily work. We don’t look any further than that and the efforts of everyone involved will
keep us on the right path”.
