'Baso', another year with Barça
Carles Cascante
Italian guard Gianluca Basile has extended his deal with Regal FC Barcelona for another season, his sixth with the Club.
Basile is a player who combines commitment and work rate with an elegant style of basketball, and
as such is the perfect symbol of a team that surrenders. He showed the same spirit during his tine
in the Italian league and it’s partly a tribute to the coach, Xavi Pascual that he’s
continuing in the same vein. In fact you might say that ‘Baso' is an extension of the coach
on court.
His arrival with Marconato
Basile joined Barça in the 2005/06 season alongside fellow countryman Denis
Marconato. It was a time when Barça desperately needed titles and despite a tough start under Dusko
Ivanovic – with only a Cup medal for their efforts – his experience and leadership on
court made him indispensable.
Very happy with Pascual
With the appointment of Pascual as head coach, Basile grew in
influence, not so much for his minutes on court but more a leader of his team-mates. As Basile has
admitted himself, there is a “special chemistry”.
'Baso' has gone as far as to say that the team’s performances in the unforgettable
2009/10 season were "the best in history”. And for him it was a personal success as he
achieved the prize he had been pursuing for 11 years – the Euroleague.
His stats over five seasons
With Barça, Basile has played a total of 203 games in the ACB and 108 in the Euro league.
He’s averaged 7.6 points (ACB) and 8.17 points (Euro league).
Praise from the captains
The two captains of Regal FC Barcelona, Roger Grimau and Juan Carlos Navarro, have both expressed
their delight at the news that Basile will be here for another year. According to Grimau: “I
value the commitment of a player who loves the Club. I think it’s a very positive piece of
news. Apart from his sporting qualities – he brings us a lot both in defence and in attack
– he’s a very committed player and he loves the Club. The fact that he is staying means
that we have maintained practically the same group as last season, which is very important”.
Juan Carlos Navarro, who is currently preparing for the World Championships at the end of
August in Turkey, told us: “It’s great to be able to hang on to such an important
player – on and off the court. Gianluca is one of those players you can’t help liking
for everything they contribute and I’m very happy he’s staying. I also think that we
have a great challenge ahead, which is to try and win the Euro league again at home, and I’m
very glad to be able to count on him to try and do it”.
