New convention delegates
Aleix Santacana
Sala París was the venue on Friday morning for the draw for convention delegates for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. A total of 3,195 members will be assuming these responsibilities at forthcoming assemblies.
The vice president of Futbol Club Barcelona, Albert Vicens, and club secretary Xavier Cambra,
presided over the draw made on Friday on the club grounds. Joan Carles Ollé, a Barcelona notary,
validated the procedure.
The process, step by step
Before the draw began, Antonio Alegre, dean at the Facultat de Ciències Econòmiques i
Empresarials, gave a brief explanation of the computer programme used for the procedure and assured
those presence of its reliability.
Alegre said the important thing is "for the draw to be purely random, as no numbers should
have a greater possibility than any others of being chosen. This would mean that everybody would
not be getting the same opportunities. Tests with the programme have shown that all members have
the same probability of being chosen, approximately 3% of the total membership.”
Notary Joan Carles Ollé then presented a disk on which the tests of the computer system were
recorded by an employee of the club’s Systems Department.
Out come 4,000 numbers
Then the draw was made. 4,000 numbers were drawn, of which the first 3,195 will be convention
delegates. The conditions to this are to be an adult, to have been a member for at least a year and
not to have had said membership suspended.
Total of 4,190 delegates
After Friday’s draw, 3,195 members will become delegates. The figure of 3,195 is based
on article 19.2 of the club statutes, taken from the multiplication of the number of members on
July 1, 2007 by 0.0015 and then adding 850.
The other members that make up the total of 4,190 delegates are the club’s longest
serving members (938), a figure derived from multiplying the number of members on July 1, 2007 by
0.006, the members of the Board of Directors (18); ex presidents (5); the members of the
Disciplinary Commission (4); the members of the Economic Commission (5), and members designated by
the Board in recognition of their merits or social significance (25).
Role of convention delegates
Albert Vicens used the occasion to remind people just how important it is to be a delegate of
Futbol Club Barcelona. In his words, they "are the members that have the right during ordinary or
extraordinary assemblies to raise questions and queries about the activities and management of the
Board of Directors and other club authorities”.
