Camp Nou turf under protection
Marc Parramon / Jordi Clos
As every summer, the Camp Nou turf will be subjected to a special treatment to prevent any deterioration cased by high temperatures. The main aims are to reduce the negative effects of the sun and humidity.
The Camp Nou looks very different to what it did at the start of the season. With competitions
over, the summer is the period for a series of measures to be implemented to ensure that the grass
is in the best possible condition when the players return.
Fight ing the heat
15 canvas sheets, five more than last season, will control the effect of the sun on the
grass. According to experts from Royal Verd, the company that manages the playing surface, without
these canvases, the temperature at pitch level can get as high as 50º, while this protection
reduces that by around 7º.
Antifungal treatment
As well as the canvases, the Camp Nou also employs 18 ventilators, 9 on
each side, that make sure the air circulates properly. These devices reduce the humidity levels,
which would otherwise be the ideal conditions for fungus growth.
These special treatments will continue to be applied up until the end of August, when
football comes back to the stadium.
