A year with UNICEF
Berta Brau / Anna Segura
FC Barcelona are celebrating their one-year anniversary on Saturday of their agreement with UNICEF, that sees the club committed to help the United Nations agency for five years.
On July 14, 2006, Barça and UNICEF signed an agreement to work together and a year later the work
continues to reach their goals. The aim is to help orphaned children in vulnerable situations
around the globe, in particular those affected by the HIV virus and AIDS.
Joint projects
As well as the annual economic contribution to UNICEF, since
July 2006 Barça has carried out several different projects through the clubs Foundation using the
motto 'More Than A Club, A New Worldwide Hope For Vulnerable Children'.
Among the initiatives there is one in Swaziland , the country most affected by AIDS. There is
also the effort to draw attention to the cause worldwide with the UNICEF logo being placed on the
football team's shirts. A football game was also organised between children in Uganda and
Barça’s cadete side.
Laureus award
Barça were awarded the Spirit of Sport award at the last Laureus Awards ceremony held in the
Catalan capital in April. The agreement with UNICEF was the key factor in decision to give the club
the honour.
