The Assembly approves Nike deal until 2018

The Club’s General Assembly has ratified the kit sponsorship deal with Nike until 2018.
On 25th October 2006, FC Barcelona signed a sponsorship deal with Nike until the 2012-2013 season
worth 150 million euros. That contract has now been extended for a further five seasons until
2017-2018 after the General Assembly approved a proposal from the Board of Directors.
Stability
The contract extension was approved by 219 votes in favour, 17 abstentions and 34 against.
The club vice-president for economic affairs, Marc Ingla, indicated that the Club’s economy
was in a healthy state and that a long-term deal such as this would contribute to Barça’s
financial stability.
The figures
The fixed part of the sponsorships contract with Nike until 2013 is worth 30 million euros
per year. In addition, the terms of the contract are updated and increased every year and there are
also a number of variable bonuses depending on titles won and the commercial success of the kit.
Marc Ingla revealed that the deal would “more than triple” Barça’s income
from kit sponsorship and that the contract, which expires in 2013, would be a reference point in
world football.
Club’s financial future not at risk
The members of the Board of Directors were questioned whether a long-term deal of this nature
might undermine the Club’s financial future. In his reply, Club president Joan Laporta denied
that this would be the case. “It’s a dynamic contract”, he insisted and went on
to emphasise Nike’s willingness to sit down and negotiate.
