Tenth anniversary of HH’s passing
Àngels Prieto
This Friday marks the tenth anniversary of the death of legendary FC Barcelona coach Helenio Herrera. Nicknamed the Magician, he guided the club to two league titles and the Inter City Fairs' Cup.
Herrera will always be remembered as one of the most
charismatic coaches in the history of the Blaugrana because of his philosophy on the way the game
should be played and his peculiar way of motivating his players before and during games. "It is
better to play with ten players than with 11," he once said. "We will win without getting off the
coach," was another famous phase is his.
The Argentinian coach took over at Barça at the end of the 1957-58 campaign and stayed until
1960, before moving to Inter along with Luis Suarez.
'HH' returned to take the reins at Camp Nou during the 1979-80 campaign and
stayed for one season before retiring from the game.
While in charge of the Catalan outfit he won two league titles, the Inter City Fairs Cup, the
Copa de Generalismo and the Copa del Rey.
Herrera died in Venice on November 9.1997 at the age of 87.
