The Boss brings music back to Camp Nou
www.fcbarcelona.cat
Bruce Springsteen will perform two concerts at Camp Nou this weekend in the first music event of its kind to be held at the stadium for three years. The last band to play at the home of FC Barcelona was U2 in August 2005.
Michael Jackson, Julio Iglesias, Lluís Llach, Josep Carreras and Springsteen, as well as U2, have
all performed over the years at the famous Catalan venue and on Saturday and Sunday the arena will
be rocking once again to the sounds of The Boss.
Lluís Llach
Llach was the first person to perform at Camp Nou in an event labelled ‘més que un
concert’ (more than a concert) on July 7, 1985. That performance saw nearly 100,000 fill the
stadium. Three years later, Springsteen played in front of 80,000 and this weekend he has already
managed to attract 72,000 who have already brought tickets. There are still some tickets left for
the Sunday gig.
Jackson, Iglesias and Amnesty International
Only six days after Springsteen's first concert, Michael Jackson played in the Stadium. The
singer appeared on August 9, 1988 and only 15,000 seats were left unsold. Four weeks later Julio
Iglesias performed in front of a crowd of 70,000.
Then, just 48 hours later, on September 10, 1988, Amnesty International held a concert in
support of human rights that saw Sting, Springsteen, Youssou N’Dour, Tracy Chapman, Peter
Gabriel and El Último de la Fila all participate.
Three Tenors and U2
There was then a gap of almost ten years before the next concert was
held at Camp Nou as on July 13, 1997 the Three Tenors, comprising Josep Carreras, Plácido Domingo
and Luciano Pavarotti played at the stadium. Carreras then performed on his own in 1999 at the
club's centenary celebrations.
Three years ago was the last time that the stadium held a music event when, on August 7,
2005, U2 performed in front of 80,000 spectators.
