Joan Segarra has died on Wednesday afternoon at the age of 81. One of the most characteristic players in the history of FC Barcelona, he was known as ‘el gran capità', Segarra is fifth in the club's all-time record appearance makers.
The Blaugrana family is in mourning at the news of the death of Segarra and the legendary defender
will always be remembered. Born in 1927 in Barcelona, he passed away in the city of Taradell,
Osona, after a long illness.
A real gentleman on the pitch, Segarra showed nobility and complete
respect for his opponents and won many plaudits for his performances throughout his career. A
multi-talented player, Segarra's best positon was on the flanks, he had a powerful shot and a very
accurate cross. He was well known for his courage and was the leader of the Blaugrana as he never
stopped encouraging those around him to play well. His superb physique and great technique on the
ball ensured that he was a regular in the team and while he was seen as a defender, Segarra had an
eye for goal when pushing up.
After retiring from the game, ‘el gran capità’ continued working with FC
Barcelona, coaching the club's youth teams and during the 1979/80 campaign he was the assistant to
coach Helenio Herrera.
