The major American daily has dedicated a special feature to FC Barcelona. The article reviews the results both on the field and off it in the form of the club’s charity work.
FC Barcelona’s sporting and social achievements are continuing to attract international media
attention. This Wednesday, the New York Times dedicated its main feature in its soccer section to
the excellent season being enjoyed by Pep Guardiola and his squad. “In Spain, Barcelona is
winning with style and a new coach” highlights the article.
A book that’s hard to put down
“For some, watching F.C. Barcelona play soccer these days is akin to reading a book
that is hard to put down” is the way the NY Times kicks off an extensive report on the
Catalan club. It picks out Pep Guardiola as the key man behind the fantastic image being projected
of the team. The analysis of its results includes the observation that they get 60% of the
possession in games and that 48 of their goals have been scored in the league, 33 of those coming
from the trio of Eto'o, Messi and Henry.
More than a Club
Naturally enough in an article dealing with Barça, the New York Times also mentions how it is
More than a Club. It reminds readers how it was a symbol of democracy and the Catalan identity
under the Franco dictatorship and that it currently carries the Unicef name on its shirt. According
to the major daily, this is one of the main factors explaining why the club now has more than
160,000 members and 1,800 supporters clubs around the world.
“Style is the name of the game at Barcelona, and that, more than anything, is what
makes it més que un club” concludes the article.
