The Italian paper ‘La Repubblica’ published a six page feature in its weekly supplement concerning the model FC Barcelona have made their own.
The magazine offers a thorough examination in the supplement, which has a readership of about
700.000 throughout Italy, in which the authors attempt to define just what makes Barca “more
than a club”.
The article begins with a photo montage of the club’s youngest team to illustrate the
commitment Barca have to their youth teams and creating their own stars, whilst providing a
thorough education for the youngsters.
“Global desire”
Club President Joan Laporta is interviewed and affirms : “the club is the most potent
weapon we have to promote Catalan identity - Barca is a Catalan club with a global desire. Our
pillars are sporting excellence, economic power, Catalan identity and solidarity”. The
disappearance of violence at the stadium is also praised by the President.
Numbers
The magazine mentions the massive number of club members and the average attendance at the
Stadium, as well as the number of sporting sections at the club and the club Museum, the third most
visited in Catalonia, quoting attendance figures given by the Museum Director, Jordi Penas.
Commitment to solidarity
Interviews with Economic Vice-President Joan Boix, or basketball star Roger Grimau
help to show the importance of the club shirt and the presence of the Catalan flag and the fact
that the team play without a shirt sponsor and advertise the work of UNICEF. Gianluci Basile and
Mia Ordeig are also referred to as examples of the club’s commitment to different sports.
