The FC Barcelona Museum has obtained the shirt of club legend Josep Sastre from his playing days in the 1920’s and 30’s. “It is now in a place where he would have wanted it to be,” said the player’s grandson.
Club director general Joan Oliver confirmed that the shirt had been acquired and will go on display
in the museum. Sastre played for Barça between 1924 and 1933 and his grandson Xavi Sastre, 35, who
unfortunately never met the star, was delighted with the decision to donate it.
Family pride
“It was a treasure that we had at home,” he told Barça TV and
www.fcbarcelona.cat. “I have always known it was there. We kept it with all of my
grandfather’s things. Neither myself nor my mother gave it much thought but when I considered
it I knew it was one of the things that I was most proud of.”
Accompanied by the museum’s director Jordi Penas, Sastre was shown around and saw the
oldest shirt on display from former player Pepe Rodríguez which was worn in 1910.
“Reading the club’s history books and records as well as speaking to my mother I
have accumulated lots of information about my grandfather,” Sastre continued. “How he
was as a player and all his statistics I now know.
“He was an inside right, but moved forward as they all played with five or six up front
back then. Sastre appeared 167 times for Barça and scored an incredible 116 goals in his nine years
at the club.
“From everything I have heard and read he played very well in the big games but did not
always shine in the lesser matches,” Sastre added.
