Three years since Unicef deal began

On September 7, 2006 a delegation from FC Barcelona and the club’s Fundación travelled to New York to sign an historic agreement with Unicef.

The deal was for five years and saw Barça pledge to give at least €1.5million-per-year to projects that help the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Programmes, that have started in places such as Swaziland, Malawi and Angola, in the past three years have included the prevention of transmission between mother and child, treatment for children, to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention within the community and to help protect orphans and one-parent families, principally in sub-Saharan Africa.

Show of solidarity

Another outcome of the accord is that Barça agreed carry Unicef’s logo on their football shirts, a gesture that was emblematic and pioneering. The team wore tops with the logo on for the first time in the Champions league in 2006/07 against Levski Sofia. Three years after the team still carry the slogan.
