Club vice-presidents Alfons Godall and Joan Franquesa made a whistle-stop visit to Warsaw this Saturday lunchtime to an exhibition entitled ‘110 years of FC Barcelona. Polish footprints in the club’s history’.
In his speech at the exhibition’s venue in the Warsaw Olympic Centre, Godall gave his thanks
to the country that had opened its doors to Barca, on the 20th anniversary of a European
Cup-Winners Cup tie held in Warsaw. The vice-president defined the club as “a global reality
in an ever-shrinking world”.
Links since the 1980s
Alfons Godall spoke about the links between Barca and Poland, such as the
above-mentioned tie against Legia, Pope John-Paul II’s mass at Camp Nou, and Poland’s
game at Camp Nou during the 1982 World Cup.
“The exhibition explains all these things very well, and it shows that there are links,
that there is a history between us. Now we need to strengthen these links. For us at Barca, this
would be great”. The vice-president also emphasised the club’s Catalan identity during
his speech.
A lot of history
‘110 years of FC Barcelona - Polish footprints in the club’s
history’ has already received a lot of visitors, and it will be on till September 24th. The
exhibition includes Barca shirts from the 1989 tie, loaned by Legia players who played in the game,
old posters of FC Barcelona, old photos and gifts made by Barca to Legia Warsaw, Wisla Cracow, Lech
Poznan and GKS Katowice.
A book has also been published about the exhibition, and both Alfons Godall and Joan
Franquesa made themselves available for book-signing.
