Sandro Rosell officially took over as the 39th president of FC Barcelona on Thursday after a ceremony in the gardens of La Masia.
Just 18 days after securing an historic win at the polls Rosell has replaced outgoing supremo Joan
Laporta at the helm and has taken possession of the top job at Camp Nou. The new president won
61.35 per cent of the vote at the elections on June 13 when 35,021 chose him to lead the club to
further success. With 57,088 members registering Rosell won the most votes in the Blaugrana’s
history.
Competing against Rosell at the ballot boxes were three other candidates. Agustí benedito
attracted 14.09 per cent of the vote, Marc Ingla 12.29 per cent and Jaume Ferrer 10.80 per cent.
Everyone’s president
From July 1, 2010 Rosell and his team
start a mandate of six years at the helm and the new president can now honour his slogan
‘Todos somos el barça’ (We are all Barça). During the build-up Rosell stated: “I
will be a president for everyone. We are all Barça.” Laporta had a brief chat with him and
wished him all the best in his new role.
Extraordinary meeting
During
the act of taking possession of the presidency the outgoing administration’s secretary Josep
Cubells read the certification of the Acta of the Mesa Electoral. That proclaimed the winning
candidate of the June 13 election and stated that a letter of notice has been sent to the Liga de
Fútbol Profesional (LFP) before explaining that a guarantee of €58 million had been paid at
an extraordinary board meeting on Thursday morning. He also signed the annual accounts of the board
corresponding to the 2009-10 season.
The new board then entered the meeting. Laporta and Rosell symbolized the handing over of the
mandate with a shake of the hands and outgoing administration was relieved of all duties. Rosell is
now the new president.
