Sandro Rosell has revealed his delight after coach Pep Guardiola put pen-to-paper on a new one-year contract and explained that the club offered him a long-term deal before agreeing to a rolling agreement.
The FC Barcelona president lifted the lid on negotiations with the highly-successful young Camp Nou
coach on Els Matins on TV3 and stated that he was pleased to have been able to give him what he
wanted. "We offered him a six-year contract, renewable yearly, but if this is what he wanted and he
is happy with this then we are very happy."
"One has to be patient with Pep," Rosell continued. "He has such a high
level of expectation of himself that he prefers to go year-by-year and not more. His renewal each
season is guaranteed and will be automatic each time he tells the board that he wants to stay for
the next six years."
Cesc Fàbregas
On the topic of Cesc Fàbregas the Barça chief explained where the club stand. "Arsenal feels
very hurt by Barça," said Rosell. "They don't want to listen to offers or sell and they are not
putting the player on the market. There was a strong dispute a few months ago and they have not
forgotten it. Nor will we be going mad tryign to sign him."
On Zlatan Ibrahimovic's status at Barça next season Rosell added: "He is our player until the
coaches say something to the contrary and until now they have said that they want him."
Economic talk
Rosell then reflected on the club's economic situation and vowed to improve things. "We will
resolve it," he stated. "We will turn it around. The club is in a delicate situation, but the
members will not pay for the problem and there will be no increase in proace. We are trying to find
a way of making a rational plan by using common sense and prudence."
Camp Nou
During the election campaign Rosell confirmed that there will not be a
new stadium built. "We have a great home, but it is looking elderly so we want to restore it and
make adequate improvements," he commented, "We must not spend €350 million or €400
million, but with €60 million or €80 million things will be fine. In fact, we have
already begun to make some improvements by reform the ladies' washing and toilet facilities."
Wheelchair access was then broached and Rosell explained that plans are in place: "In the
short-term we creating 250 space in a special area for them and when we have restructured fully
there will be around 600."
