In a recent visit to Nigeria, Bill Gates, the president and cofounder of Microsoft has demonstrated the club’s commitment to the fight against polio by presenting that country’s authorities with a Barça shirt as a symbol of the campaign.
Since last summer, Barça, the FC Barcelona Foundation and the Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation
have been working together to eradicate polio using the slogan ‘More than a goal. End
polio’. The co-president of the North American organisation, Bill Gates, recently visited
Nigeria, one of the priority cases in this struggle and a country that is especially committed to
the cause.
Barça present on trip
Bill Gates, aware of the power of FC Barcelona as an instrument for social campaigns,
presented a Barça shirt to Busuyi Onabolu, president of the PolioPlus Nogerian National Committee,
as a symbol of FCB’s commitment to the fight against this disease.
Aware of club’s implication
The philanthropist wanted to use this as a way of demonstrating Barça’s commitment to
the cause. Gates also met the president of the country, Goodluck Jonathan, and representatives of
the United Nations and other social bodies that are working to eradicate polio in the country, the
target being to have it totally eliminated by late 2012.
