Manchester win at Anfield in the 90th minute (0-1)
A goal in the 90th minute by John O’Shea gave victory to Manchester United in the dying seconds of the game. Liverpool will now take on Barça on Tuesday having lost at home.
Barça travel to Liverpool on Tuesday in the knowledge that only a victory will give them hope of a
safe passage to the next round. Liverpool, however, had to play an important game at home before
the crucial tie on Tuesday. John O’Shea’s last minute goal was enough to take the three
points away from Anfield and help continue their quest for the title.
A lot of respect
In the opening stages, both teams gave each other the respect deserved. Liverpool were the
first to take the initiative in attack while united waited for their chance. The first danger play
happened in the 15th minute when Mark Gonzalez got a head to the ball and made Van der Sar stretch
top keep it out.
Chances for everyone
Cristiano Ronaldo came close in the 22nd following great build up play from Larsson, however,
his shot was too high. Riise hit the post from a free kick just outside the united box and
Gonzalez, Bellamy and Gerrard were posing the biggest threats for the visiting side.
Subs, red card and goal
After the restart, Liverpool continued piling on the pressure. Benitez decided to change
things around a little by bringing on Aurelio and Pennant in place of Bellamy and Gonzalez, while
Crouch came on for Sissoko. Scholes saw red in the closing stages of the game and Peter Crouch was
unable to latch onto what could have been a clear opportunity. The goal came following a free kick
by Giggs, which was followed up by O’Shea to secure the tthree points. Liverpool now face an
uphill challenge to catch Manchester United and stand any chance of winning the Premier league.
