México, with Márquez, defeat Paraguay (2-1)
The FC Barcelona centre back played all ninety minutes of Mexico’s win against Paraguay, and was one of best performers in this international friendly in Monterrey.
Rafa Márquez led Mexico in a game that serves as preparation for the upcoming Copa America in
Venezuela, playing the entire match in the centre of defence.
It was Hugo Sánchez’s first home fixture as manager of the ‘Tricolour’, and
he saw his charges win through a brace from Jared Borgettti in the 79th and 82nd minutes. The
striker was the outstanding player in the game, scoring the first just 30 seconds after coming on
as substitute. Paraguay’s reply was scored by Santa Cruz in injury time.
Not only Márquez, but also Ronaldinho, Eto’o, Iniesta, Xavi, Gio and Thuram have played
international matches this weekend. Gudjohnsen, with Iceland, and Zambrotta, with Italy, will be
playing on Wednesday.
