Goals for Iniesta and Gio

Both Andres Iniesta and Gio Van Bronkhorst scored decisive goals in their international outings in order to help their respective teams towards qualification of the European Championships in 2008.

Both players are not normally associated with scoring goals, however, Iniesta for Spain and Gio for Holland made sure their teams took the three points away from Iceland and Slovenia, respectively.

Happy for the goal

Andres Iniesta played a key role in the victory on Wednesday against Eidur Gudjohnsen’s Iceland. The author of the goal recognised the importance of his contribution: “The truth is that we had to work hard fork the victory. A draw would have complicated things a lot, however, we’ve come through these past two games with two important victories. We now have the possibility of being among the top two”.

Questioned over whether he feels like the team’s saviour, the midfielder replied: “the goal was important and I’m very happy”

Objective: Third Consecutive Liga

Regarding Barça’s next opponents, Deportivo, Iniesta thinks it will not be straight forward, however, the whole team wants to keep hold of the title: “Like all games, it will be difficult – we have to face them in this way. The final part of the season is always greatly anticipated and for that reason, we have to get the three points. We have the home advantage, however, against a team like Depor, we cannot let our guard down for a second. If we won the Liga for the third consecutive year, it would be fantastic”.

Gio downs Slovenia

In Gio’s case, his 86th minute goal gave victory to Marco van Basten’s Holland. “It was a difficult game after having drawn against Romania. We needed to win and they are three golden points” said Gio, happy for his team.

Final Destination: Feyenoord

Born in Rotterdam on the 5th February 1975, Gio has announced he will finish his career with Feyenoord; the club with which he played for between 1994 and 1998. “They’re in my heart and I want to finish up with them, however, I have a contract with Barça and I still want to play here”.

In defense of Ronaldinho
Andres Iniesta has also spoken of his wish that Ronaldinho stays at Camp Nou for many years ahead: “I can only say that I want him to stay for many years. He’s said he feels good here therfore I don’t think there’s anything more that needs to be said. He knows we’re happy with him and I believe happiness is priceless”.

For his part, Ronnie’s left sided wing man, Gio van Bronkhorst considers “in a team like Brazil, the number 10 is a magical number, but it doesn’t change the player. For me, Ronnie’s the best player in the world with any number”.
