Three generations of ex Barcelona players at Zaragoza
Albert Celades, Sergio Garcia and Gerard Piqué are all former Barça youth team players, but the trio will all be lining up for the opposition, Zaragoza, on Saturday.
Celades, Sergio Garcia and Piqué are the products of three different generations of Barcelona
players, and are all now plying their trade in the Aragonese capital. All three are regular
contributors to Víctor Fernández’s first team plans, and have already met Barça in both the
league and cup this season.
The veteran
31 year old Celades is the oldest of the three. After Barça, he went on to play for Celta,
Real Madrid and Girondins Bordeaux before coming to Zaragoza, where once a first team regular, he
is now struggling to hold on to his place in the starting line-up, and has only appeared in 13
league games this season. Nevertheless, his experience still contributes enormously to the Zaragoza
midfield, and he is still known to score the odd goal or two.
The goalscorer
Out of the three, Sergio Garcia is the one that
plays the most minutes. The 23 year old from Buen Pastor has scored four times this season, and
Víctor Fernández has learned that he is quite capable of teaming up in attack with more
internationally recognised stars like Ewerthon and Aimar. Mallorca, Espanyol twice and Getafe have
been his victims this season.
The newcomer
And finally there is young Gerard Piqué. Aged just 20 years he signed for Zaragoza this
season from Manchester United. A natural centre back, Víctor Fernández has preferred to move him up
to centre-mid in most of his appearances for Zaragoza.
Piqué already scored against Barça
The only one of the three to have scored against their former club, Barcelona, was Gerard Piqué.
That was in the return leg of the Copa del Rey quarter final in February. But although his goal
added some tension to the final minutes of the match, ultimately it was nothing more than a
consolation effort.
