Samuel Eto’o has always featured prominently in games between Barça and Mallorca. He has played for both sides, and scored plenty of goals in the process.
Barça and Mallorca are the two clubs closest to Samuel Eto’o’s heart. Despite now
being a key member of Barça, it is no secret that the Cameroonian still feels plenty of affection
for the Balearic club, and has even said that he would like to return there before hanging up his
boots.
So, these games are among the highlights of the season for last season’s top goalscorer
in La Liga. He played for Mallorca in the only two games the side has ever won at the Camp Nou, and
as a Barça player, he has never failed to score when his former club has been in town.
With Mallorca
As a Mallorca player, Samuel Eto’o played Barça seven times either at
the Camp Nou or Son Moix. He played at the Camp Nou four times, and scored three goals. And it was
he who scored two of his side’s three goals on that historic day of the 1999-2000 season,
when Mallorca won away to FC Barcelona for the first time in their history.
He was also involved in Mallorca’s only other victory at the Camp Nou, a 2-1 win in the
2002-03 season. His other visits to Barcelona as a Mallorca player ended 1-1 in 2000-01, and 3-2 to
Barça in 2003-04, when Eto’o was also on target for the visitors.
With Barça
As a Barça player, his performances have been even better. In a Barça shirt he has faced his
former side three times and scored five goals. Two of these games have been at the Camp Nou, in
which he was on target three times. In 2004-05, Eto’o contributed to a 2-0 win against
Mallorca, with Deco getting the other. Last season Barça won by the same 2-0 margin, with both
goals coming from the Cameroonian striker.
In Mallorca
Eto’o has also has plenty to say in games between the
sides in Palma de Mallorca. As a Mallorca player he appeared three times at Son Moix against Barça,
scoring once, in the 99-00 season as his side went on to win 2-0. He will have less pleasant
memories of the 2002-03 encounter, which his side lost 4-0 at home, and in which he was sent off.
Mallorca also lost the following 2003-04 season, this time 3-1. As a Barcelona player he has only
played in Mallorca once, in the 2004-05 season, and it was there that he scored his first two goals
in a Barcelona shirt as the Catalans went on to win 3-1.
