Xavi: “We’ve got everything in our favour”
Jordi Clos
The midfielder expressed his confidence about FC Barcelona’s chances of claiming the league and cup double. For the Barça number 6 “the pressure shouldn’t effect us, we depend on ourselves”.
With Barça on top of the table and a step away from the cup final, Xavi Hernandez is confident of
finishing the season in style. “We’ve got everything in our favour”, he said to
the press after the conclusion of Friday’s training session. However he did admit that
Barça’s title rivals have also got reasons to be optimistic.
“We depend on ourselves”
Xavi pointed out repeatedly the fact that Barça is the only
team with their fate in their own hands as they aim for the league and cup double:
“We’re still leaders and we depend on ourselves. At this stage that is a great
advantage”. Although he is only 27 years old, his wealth of experience help him to know how
Barça must act in the final weeks of the season: “the pressure shouldn’t effect us, we
have to give it everything as their is no margin of error”. He also said that having four of
the last six league matches at the Camp Nou is a positive factor. “If I wasn’t sure
about winning both titles I would go home”, he joked.
Rivals disadvantage
Despite his confidence, the midfielder also acknowledged “our rivals have reason to be
optimistic as they’ve cut the distance and they’ve done that because of our
mistakes”. However, Xavi again pointed out that although they’ve closed the gap
Barça’s rivals don’t have their fate in their own hands.
Saviola’s future
As a good friend of Saviola, Xavi Hernandez was asked about the future of the
Argentinian striker. Regarding the recent rumours linking the Barça player to other clubs, Xavi
declared, “it’s just all talk and hypothesis”. Xavi admitted however that if the
player does not continue at Barça then he could transfer to any other club. “He’s a
professional and has to think about his future”.
The visit of the Japanese kid
The FC Barcelona squad received a visit from the young Japanese boy who was immortalised when
caught on camera crying after Barça’s defeat at the World Club Championship in Japan. Xavi
Hernández, one of the captains, went to meet him. “Inviting him here was the least we could
do”. Amidst laughter in the press room Xavi added, “I hope we don’t make him cry
again”.
