Déhu returns to the Camp Nou
Míriam Nadal
Having played for Barcelona in the 1999-2000 season, Frederic Déhu will be back at Barça on Sunday, but this time wearing the opposition’s shirt. It will be the first time the Levante star has faced his former club.
“It is the most special game of the season. I mean that from the heart, and it’s very
important for the team. We need points”, said Gallic defender Frederic Déhu. Signed by Louis
Van Gaal in 1999, the Frenchman is aware that Barcelona are favourites to take all three points,
but also knows how desperately Levante need points of their own to avoid the drop. Speaking to
www.fcbarcelona.cat, he said “everyone thinks Barça will win easily. But we need a result and
will be looking to cause a surprise. We have nothing to lose and everything to win”.
Still following Barça
Déhu still keeps an eye on events at his former club, and admires the way
the team plays. “They always play the same way. They have good players and are always
fighting to be at the top”.
Favourites for the title
Asked whether he thought Barça would win the league again this season, Dehu said “Barça
are the big favourites, but either Madrid or Sevilla can still win it. But Barça play the better
football”.
Levante need continuity
The 34 year old signed for the Valencia based club in the
summer, knowing that he was on his way to one of the weaker sides in the Spanish top flight.
“We haven’t won for a long time. I knew before coming here that it would be difficult
but our results just aren’t consistent enough”, he said, before refusing to give away
any clues about the way his team planned to tackle the Camp Nou challenge, saying that surprise was
their main weapon.
Goal at the Gamper
Dehu was asked to look back on the year he spent at Barça, and pick out his finest memory.
For him it was “the goal I scored in the Gamper against Sporting Lisbon”, while his
worst moment was “the injury to the sole of my foot in the third game, which put me out for a
month and a half”.
Barça best for Ronaldinho
Frederic Déhu played at Paris Saint Germain for four seasons (2000-04), and for some of that time
he played alongside the great Ronaldinho Gaúcho, a player he feels a huge admiration for. “He
is the best player in the world” said Déhu. PSG just weren’t big enough for the
promising Brazilian, and he eventually settled for a move south to Catalonia. “I think Barça
is the best place for Ronaldinho” said Dehu. “It is the team that plays the way he
likes best”.
