Derby: Goals and action
David Puig
A derby at Camp Nou is synonymous with goals and action. The clashes between the blaugrana and blanc-i-blaus promise on average, more than three goals a game.
It is one of the most highly anticipated games of the season and at the same time, one of the most
spectacular. A derby always offeres intensity, emotion and goals. In the 72 games which Barça and
Espanyol have played since the season of 1928 – 29, a total of 243 goals have been scored in
both the Les Corts stadium and since 1957, at Camp Nou. With an average of 3.37 goals per game, the
derby promises goals.
High scoring games
Barça and Espanyol have been involved in some spectacular goals fests. Since the first 5-4 in
1929-30 to the more recent 5-2, which the dream team of 1991 inflicted on Luis Aragones’
Espanyol. We also find big results such as the 5-1 in 1947-48 and 5-3 in 1958-59.
Last big result
The most recent rout occurred in 2003-4 with Frank Rijkaard at the helm. On this occasion,
Barça ran out victors 4-1 over Luis Fernandez’s team after coming back with 2 goals from
Saviola, 1 from Ronnie and 1 from Gio, following Raul Tamudo’s opener. Espanyol’s best
result came in 1954-55 with a 1-4 victory.
