Possibilities for Sevilla
Míriam Nadal
While most of the attention will be focussed on the Barça and Real Madrid next weekend, Sevilla can still lift the league title at the last gasp if the big two slip up.
Sevilla drew their last game – against Mallorca in the Ono Estadi - a match where coach
Juande Ramos had to cope with a number of important absences, including Jesús Navas, Kerjakov and,
above all, Kanouté. If Sevilla had taken the three points, they would now be part of a three-way
tie on points together with Real Madrid and Barça.
This Sunday at 9 pm, Sevilla will face Villarreal, a club that has to fight it out with
Zaragoza and Atlético Madrid for the two UEFA Cup places.
Their chances
Sevilla will be league champions if Madrid doesn’t win and Barça loses. Obviously,
Sevilla will need a lot to run in their favour but looking back at last weekend’s results
it’s clear that anything is possible.
Not at full strength
Sevilla manager Juande Ramos will be without some of his key
players for Sunday’s match. Among those who will be missing are Kanouté (away on
international duty with Mali), Alves (with Brazil for the Copa America), central defenders
Dragutinovic and Javi Navarro and, possibly, Adriano (right biceps). Meanwhile, Navas and Kerjakov
will face last minute fitness tests.
If Sevilla are to add the league title to the UEFA Cup and the European Super Cup, they will
have to do so without some of the key players who have contributed to such a successful season.
