Eight Ligas won on final day
Roger Bogunyà/Aleix Santacana
If Barça are crowned Liga winners this Sunday, it will be the ninth time they have won the title on the final day of the season. Eight of the eighteen Ligas Barça have won, have been won in this way.
On many occasions we have heard the cules followers say that they are used to suffering. A common
expression if we take into account that, historically, Barça fans have had to suffer a lot given
that eight Liga titles have been decided on the last day of the season.
1929, the first
On the 30th June 1929, Barça beat Arenas de Getxo 0-2 to win their fist Liga title by two
points over Madrid.
Four more between 1948 and 1960
19 years after winning the Liga on the final day of the season, Barça found themselves in a
similar position. Seasons 1947-48 and 1949-49, Barça were up against Athletic club and Espanyol
respectively; on both occasions Barça won against Valencia.
On the 3rd May 1953, Barça repeated the feat in extreme circumstances; beating Athletic club
at home 3-2. On 17th April 1969, the battle between Barça and Madrid was settled on goal
difference; Barça’s 5-0’ victory over Zaragoza giving the title to the blaugrana.
The dream team
The three titles won by the dream team between 1992 and 1994 were the most recent. On all
three occasions, Johan Cruyff’s team were reliant on the other teams, and on all three
occasions they took advantage of those teams as they caved under the pressure. Tenerife’s
wins over Madrid in 1992 and 1993, and a missed penalty by Djukic in the 90th minute against
Valencia, were key in Barça winning four consecutive Liga titles.
Well accustomed
Barça have not felt this way since, due to Van Gaal’s and Rijkaard’s teams
winning Liga titles with games to spare, therefore, the supporters being able to celebrate victory
before the final game.
