History on Barça’s side
David Puig
Barça and Sevilla have met ten times in the Cup and Barça has come out on top on seven occasions. The last meeting was in the 1990-91 season.
This will be the eleventh time the two clubs have met in the Cup though since it was renamed the
Kings Cup they have only faced each other once – in the quarterfinals of the 1990-91 season.
Barça, coached by Johan Cruyff, won the tie easily on aggregate 7-0.
The first leg was played in Sevilla’s Sánchez Pizjuán stadium. Barça won 0-4
with goals from Laudrup, Eusebio, Bakero and Herrero (o.g.). Barça then won the return leg 3-0,
goals from Eusebio (2) and Julio Salinas.
Barça dominance
Previously, the two sides had met five times in the ‘Copa del Generalísimo’, with
Sevilla coming out on top on three occasions. Before that, during the 2nd Republic, in the 1933-34
season, Barça eliminated Sevilla from the ‘Copa Presidente’ in the quarterfinals with
an aggregate score of 7- 4.
Finally, while the competition carried the name of ‘Copa Alfonso XII’, Barça
eliminated Sevilla in the 1918-19, 1921-22 and 1928-29 seasons.
