Goals, thrills and good football
Berta Brau
Goals, thrills and good football. Those are the three main features of games between Barcelona and Villarreal in the eight games that the two teams have played in the Camp Nou.
Since the Yellow Submarine first won promotion to the top flight in 1998-99, they have visited
Barça on eight occasions the statistics show that the hosts have won four times, two have ended in
a draw and twice the visitors have won.
Healthy average
Looking at the previous meetings between the two teams, it is easy to see that beyond
the results the two teams always put on a show. If the games are added to together along with the
goals, it can be seen that on average each game between Barcelona and Villarreal produces an
average of 3.3 goals.
Three big games
Looking back, three particular games stand out. In 2001-02 Barça defeated Víctor Muñoz side
in Camp Nou 4-1 with Luis Enrique, Thiago Motta, Patrick Kluivert and Javier Saviola the Blaugrana
scorers, while Víctor replied for the away team.
Last term
Last season, 2006-07, FC Barcelona eased to a 4-0 win as they started brightly and
never allowed their opponents to settle. Ronaldinho scored twice while Eidur Gudjohnsen and Andrés
Iniesta netted to complete the victory.
Six-goal thriller
The game that saw the most goals scored came in 2004-05 when the two sides drew 3-3.
Ronaldinho scored once and Ludovic Giuly twice against Pepe Reina, while Diego Forlán scored a
hat-trick for Villarreal in the game that saw Albert Jorquera play for the home team.
