Hugo Sánchez rests Márquez
Jesús Carrilllo
Mexico manager Hugo Sánchez rested national captain Rafa Márquez in the final group match against Chile ahead of the sterner tests to come.
A draw against Chile in their final group game was enough to give the Mexico team top place in
Group B.
The 0-0 draw also means that Chile will progress to the quarterfinals of the Copa America
2007. In a rather low-key match, both sides knew that a draw would be enough to send them through
to the next round, with Mexico finishing top while Chile qualified as the best third-placed team.
Brazil, with a penalty
Meanwhile, Brazil beat Ecuador 1-0 thanks to a penalty from Real Madrid’s Robinho.
Brazil finish second in the group behind Mexico with two wins and a defeat. Ecuador are eliminated
from the competition.
Four eliminated
The four countries that are eliminated from the competition are Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia
and the USA. The last two still have to play their match but the result will have no effect on the
standings.
Quarterfinals
Two of the quarterfinal pairings are now known. Venezuela and Uruguay, who met already in
Group A, will lock horns again in the quarterfinal while Brazil will take on Chile in a re-run of
their Group B match.
