Argentina and Brazil in Copa América showdown
Jesús Carrillo / Anna Segura
There have been no major surprises in the South American championship, and Argentina and Brazil meet in tonight’s Copa América final. Very few games have so much history attached to them than those between these two.
The curtain comes down on a successfully organised first ever Copa America in Venezuela tonight
with the two initial favourites meeting in the final.
Barça in Argentina
Leo Messi and new signing Gaby Milito are the two Barça representatives
in the match. The young striker scored another wonder goal in the semi final to put out club
colleague Rafa Márquez’s Mexico.
Argentina qualified from a first round group that included Paraguay, Colombia and the Unites
States, then cruised to victory against Peru before another convincing performance against Mexico.
Brazil getting better
Brazil got off to a slow start with defeat in their opening game against Mexico. Next came
wins against Chile and Ecuador, and another game with the Chileans in the last eight. That game
won, they made it into the final after putting out Uruguay on penalties following a 2-2 draw.
Mexico take third
Hugo Sánchez’s Mexico side made sure of third place in the tournament last night as the
beat Uruguay 3-1.
Argentina top scorers
Argentina have been scoring goals with ease in Venezuela, with 16 in just five games. They also
have the best defensive record, having only conceded two. Alfio Basile’s side has won every
game in this 2007 Copa América, while Brazil have lost once, drawn another, and scored 15 while
letting in five.
