With a week left before the season starts, Barça are feeling confident after an impressive pre-season campaign and the signing of four outstanding players during the summer.
Thierry Henry, Gabriel Milito, Touré Yaya and Éric Abidal have been added to the Blaugrana squad
since the end of last term and all four have shown their quality already. The quartet were also
photographed together for the first time on Friday for www.fcbarcelona.cat.
On the same day that UEFA took official head shots and a team group photo for their Champions
League publications, the new arrivals at Camp Nou all posed together for the first time in Barça
colours.
Balancing act
The main aim during the summer for the club was to bolster the defence and the arrival
of Milito, to play in the centre of the back four, Abidal, to strengthen the left-back position and
Touré to bring balance to the side has meant that the squad now has a new equilibrium that Frank
Rijkaard has talked about on numerous occasions. With only one goal conceded in their six
pre-season games, the defence looks a lot more solid.
Henry
Henry was one of the star signings of the summer in world football and the French
international has already shown why he is rated so highly within the game. Only a few weeks after
finally shaking off a long-term injury, the forward has become just another player in Rijkaard's
star-studded squad, but he is already beginning to show his class.
All together now
While Gaby Milito enjoyed an extended holiday, following his participation in the Copa América, the
other three new signings have spent the entire pre-season working with their new team-mates and
that has helped their integration into the club and the city. Against Bayern Munich, Milito made
his Barça debut in the 61st minute and it was the first time that all four new arrivals had played
in the same game (0-1 ).
