Barça delight a packed Camp Nou
Jordi Clos
FC Barcelona produced an excellent five-goal performance against Inter Milan on Wednesday night in front of almost 100,000 spectators.
The 42ª Joan Gamper tournament was a complete sell-out, with 98,599 spectators enjoying a spirited
Barça performance. However, there was also a sombre side to the evening as the fans paid tribute to
the recently deceased former Barça vice-president Nicolau Casaus and Sevilla player Antonio Puerta.
A colourful sight
On entering the stadium, the fans were given the first ‘Diari Camp Nou’
newsletter of the season – devoted to the evening’s match – plus the
‘Member’s Guide’. The new official shirt was much in evidence on the terraces
alongside the shirts from the previous two seasons, making a mosaic of blues and yellows.
A tribute
A buzz went around the Camp Nou every time that Henry received the ball, Deco was applauded
every time he took a free kick, while former Madrid player Solari was greeted by a hostile
reception. By the 30th minute the first Mexican wave appeared and was subsequently followed a
number more. Barça flags were to be seen everywhere and the noise of the claxons was deafening. A
tremendous tribute to two great figures of the football world - Puerta and Casaus.
