The Dutch manager has left Glasgow pleased with the team’s performance and said “I am sorry we couldn’t score a goal to make the difference.” Rijkaard believes “a draw was not such a bad result.”
Frank Rijkaard has a sweet and sour taste in his mouth as he returns to Barcelona after a game
his side dominated but in which they failed to convert their chances into goals. “A draw in
the Champions league is not a bad result” he commented.
“An improved side”
After losing in Villarreal, Rijkaard felt today’s performance symbolised a reaction.
“The group has worked well, they fought and improved physically. We are only sorry we
couldn’t get the goal to make the difference and that’s why we suffered until the last
minute.” He added that the draw “gives us confidence. We have to keep working because
everything will come in time.”
Holding on
Frank Rijkaard was asked to defend his decision to play for a draw rather than push forward
for the three points in the dying moments of the game. He replied that “the team played to
win the match but when there are only two or three minutes left it is better to hold on for the
draw.” He added that there is still the return to come at the Camp Nou, where “we are
stronger”.
Recognition for Gudjohnsen
Against Rangers, Eidur Gudjohnsen played his first game of the season, and did so in an
unfamiliar position, midfield. Rijkaard was impressed with his performance, saying “he was a
very important player for us both because of his physical effort and the way he plays.”
At Ibrox Park, Rijkaard made another odd move in playing Carles Puyol at right back, where
“he functioned well.” He also mentioned the excellent work put in by central defenders
Thuram and Milito.
