Berta Brau
Barça and Atlético Madrid have gone head-to-head 40 times in the Spanish Cup in 21 ties. At present Barça are ahead with 11 overall wins.
FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid are not exactly unknown quantities for each other, as in addition
to 140 League clashes they have also disputed 40 King’s Cup matches. Of those 40 games Barça
have won 17, there have been 8 draws and 15 wins for the Madrid outfit.
Barça on top
The two teams have faced off in 21 Cup ties including two finals which ended in a victory
apiece and a replay. Out of those 21 ties, Barça have won 11.
Most recent Barça win
The last time Barça won against Atlético Madrid was in the quarterfinals in 1996/97. The
Catalans got a two all draw in the first leg at Vicente Calderón, before making an amazing recovery
in the second leg from three nil down to win 5-4 with a Ronaldo hat-trick and two other goals from
Figo and Pizzi.
Lots of goals
Clashes between the two sides in the Cup have always been marked by
goals and good football. Between them they have found the net 143 times in those 40 games (81 for
Barça and 62 for Madrid) which makes an average of 3 ½ goals per match. Barça have also handed out
some thrashings, most notably in 1952/53 and 1956/57 at Camp Nou when they ran out winners 8-1 on
both occasions.
