Record number of away wins
Anna Segura
Josep Guardiola’s Barça has become something of an expert in winning away from home. Their eight victories on the road in the League this season is a new record.
Since losing at Numancia (1-0) in their first League fixture this term, Barça have won eight times
away from home on the bounce to break the previous record of seven set by Real Madrid in 1960-61.
Tough grounds...
Some of these eight away wins have come at traditionally
tough grounds such as Sánchez Pizjuán, where the Catalans beat Seville (0-3), and El Madrigal,
where they overcame Villarreal (1-2).
... and bad weather
Plus they’ve also won in inclement weather. Away at
Malaga, for instance, heavy rain made the pitch into a quagmire, while this Sunday’s win at
Reyno del Navarra was achieved in the midst of fog and intense cold.
Thirteen wins in total
Barça’s away form in their other two competitions has
also been impeccable. In the Champions League they have racked up wins at Shakhtar (1-2), Basle
(0-5) and Sporting Lisbon.
It’s much the same story in the Spanish Cup. In the last 32 the Catalans won away at
Benidorm in the first leg (0-1), while only last Tuesday they put themselves in a strong position
in their last 16 tie against Atlético Madrid with a 1-3 away win at Vicente Calderón. That makes a
total of 13 wins away from home.
