Gudjohnsen about to make first ton
Jordi Clos
The Icelandic attacking midfielder has played 99 games in the FC Barcelona shirt. Since signing in 2006/07, the highly versatile star has racked up 19 goals.
Eidur Gudjohnsen is about to celebrate a centenary of appearances for Barça, the game with Racing
Santander having been his 99th. The games have been spread across the Liga (59), the Champions
League (20), Copa del Rey (16) World Clubs Cup (2), Spanish Super Cup (1) and European Super Cup
(1).
From forward to midfielder
Gudjohnsen came from Chelsea to FCB in the summer
of 2006 as a direct replacement for Henrik Larsson. In his first season he played in his familiar
striker’s role, and especially came into his own when he provided cover for the injured
Samuel Eto'o.
But things changed for the Icelander last season.
Coach Frank Rijkaard tried playing him in his injury-plagued midfield, and Gudjohnsen proved
remarkably effective in that position, creating some useful attacking strength from behind.
Rotations under Guardiola
With Pep Guardiola on the bench, the 30 years old international has become a key element of
the rotation system in use. This season he has played in 11 league games, 3 in Europe and 4 in the
cup. He is contributing more and more to the attacking department, and has scored 4 goals and
supplied 3 assists this term.
