Ton-up Barça
Marc Guillén
Barça have racked up their tenth League win on the spin after scoring their 100th goal this season with a strike from Eto’o, who is also just one off his personal ton in the League.
Barça ended 2008 beating its four main rivals for the title
and has begun 2009 with six more consecutive League wins to rack up ten in total, the best run of
the season so far. The last slip-up was against Getafe, prior to which they’d come out on top
in nine games in a row.
More than 100 goals
Barça scored three times against Sporting Gijón to total 102 in 37 competitive games this
season at an average of 2.75 per game.
Eto'o further out in front
The Cameroon international has netted 21 times in his 21 outings and is
four ahead of second-placed Valencia striker David Villa at the top of the League goal
scorers’ table. Eto’o is the third highest marksman in Barça’s history on 99
goals and seventh in all competitions. His two goals this Sunday mean he now totals 118 in
competitive games to take him past Hristo Stoichkov.
Goal on the break
Barça’s first goal against Sporting came from a move
for the photo album. It began with a Sporting corner and thanks to zone marking four Barça players
were on the edge of the box to pick up the clearance and storm up field. Then the talent and speed
of Henry and Eto’o led to a magnificent goal.
Eto'o takes blame for Sporting goal
On the El Marcador programme on Barça TV, Samuel Eto'o claimed he was to blame for Sporting’s
consolation goal: “It was my fault because I should have been at the edge of the box to pick
up the clearance but I lost concentration. I’d like to say I’m sorry”. Eto'o
refuses to accept praise for his goals, saying that scoring them is his job, and highlights his
errors because he knows that football is a team game.
