A homemade derby
Jesús Carrillo
Saturday’s game at the Camp Nou between Barça and Espanyol offers the attraction of a large number of locally produced players, many of which form the core of their respective teams.
No fewer than eleven of the FC Barcelona first team came out of La Masía. These are Víctor Valdés,
Albert Jorquera, Víctor Sánchez, Xavi Hernández, Carles Puyol, Andrés Iniesta, Pedro Rodríguez,
Sergio Busquets, Bojan Krkic, Leo Messi and Gerard Piqué.
Espanyol has the same number of youth team products: Ángel
Martínez, Javi Chica, Ferran Corominas, David García, Dani Jarque, Jonathan Soriano, Moisés
Hurtado, Sergio Sánchez, Óscar Sielva, Raúl Tamudo and Marc Torrejón. However, Soriano left for
Albacete during the winter transfer window.
Forming the core
Both sides base much of their game around the local players. Barça’s starting line-up
regularly features Valdés, Piqué, Puyol, Iniesta, Xavi and Leo Messi. In other words, about 50% of
the tam. The same is the case with Espanyol: Jarque, Torrejón, Moisés, Sergio Sánchez and Raúl
Tamudo are all regular members of the first eleven.
In minutes
FC Barcelona’s home produced players have enjoyed a total of 11,342 minutes on the pitch, in
comparison to the 9,519 that have been granted to those at Espanyol.
Víctor Valdés is Barça’s former youth player that has played the most, 2,070 minutes,
while Espanyol centre back Dani Jarque has been used the most in combination by the three different
managers that have sat on the blue and white bench this season.
