Henry moves up the European goal charts
Berta Brau
Thierry Henry's goal against Olympique Lyonnais on Tuesday evening saw him become the fifth highest all-time goalscorer in European competition with 48 goals, as he surpassed Eusebio's record of 47.
The Frenchman's effort in the second half in Stade Gerland was not only valuable to the Blaugrana,
but it was also Henry's third goal in the Champions League this term, his 16th of the current
season and one that saw him move up a place in the all-time European goalscoring charts. With 48
goals to his name in the European Cup, Henry overtook Eusebio, with whom he had been level on 47
goals up until then.
48 goals in the European Cup
Since making his debut in the competition on October 1,
1997, when he appeared for Monaco in their win over Bayer Leverkusen, Henry has netted 48 goals, as
mentioned above, in the competition in 103 matches, meaning he has an average of 0.46
goals-per-game, meaning just under a goal-per-match. Only Raúl, with 64, Ruud van Nistelrooy, with
60, Andriy Shevchenko, with 56, and Alfredo di Stéfano, with 49, have scored more.
Monaco and Arsenal
With Monaco, Henry scored seven goals in Europe in the 1997-98 campaign
and that was followed by two yeas with Juventus when he did not play in the Champions League. At
Arsenal, he became a regular scorer and it was with the Gunners that he netted no less than 35
times.
Six goals for Barça
With FC Barcelona, he has now scored six goals, with three coming last term and three more
this year. Last season he scored against Celtic, Rangers and Olympique Lyonnais and this term he
has found the net against Olympique Lyonnais, again, Sporting Lisbon and Wisla Krakow.
