“It’s normal for the keeper to be under the microscope”

David Puig

Víctor Valdés accepts the criticism, but for him the most important thing are the team’s performances, which he considers fine despite recent results. The Barça keeper spoke about his current situation and the forthcoming game with Atlético Madrid.

Víctor Valdés spoke to a press conference about his and his team’s situations and some of the criticism he has received for the goals conceded against Olympique Lyon and Espanyol. This he accepts, but knows that that’s all part of football and despite going winless for three games, the team is still looking strong.

“The goalkeeper always comes under the magnifying glass. I’ve been used to that since I was twenty. The most important thing is the day to day, the manager’s support and that of my team mates. Historically, Barça keepers have always been heavily criticised, and I have to accept that that’s just part of football” said Valdés.

The keeper refuses to accept that two draws and a defeat in three games were his own fault. “The Barça keeper has the same responsibility as the other players. When you let goals in, there are things you don’t like. My responsibility is to stop them from happening. But you have to look at our work in general, not specific things. In that sense, the team is doing a great job”.

“You have to feel proud of this team”

Valdés does not think too much should be made of the last three results. “It is a time to feel proud of the team. We are not as bad as some people like to think and we have to remember that we are still alive in three competitions”.

Tough trip to Vicente Calderón

Despite the recent goods results against Atlético Madrid, Valdés does not think they will have an easy time of it at the Vicente Calderón. “Atlético Madrid play good football, especially in front of their own fans. It won’t be easy for us. Recent matches? Every game and every season is a different story. I hope we can get a win on Sunday”.

Juninho’s goal
Valdés spoke about what it had felt like to be in goal when Juninho took such a brilliant free kick to open the scoring for Lyon on Tuesday night. “In free kicks like those, Juninho usually shoots to the near post, so when he went for the far post, we were taken a bit by surprise. Olympique always make the best of chances like that.”
