Managers met only once as players
Edgar Fornós
Josep Guardiola and Hugo Sánchez only faced each other once as players in their career, when Barca beat Rayo Vallecano, Sanchez’s last club in Spain, by four goals to two.
The two managers came up against each other in the thirteenth game of the 1993-94, when Johan
Cruyf’s team visited Vallecas. Barca had suffered a series of poor results and the win in
Madrid was a welcome return to form for Guardiola and the team. Sanchez himself scored both goals
for the hosts, whilst Guillermo Amor and Ronald Koeman each scored twice to give Barca the win.
Poor record against Barca
As a player, Hugo Sanchez played against Barca on 19 occasions. In his time at Rayo and
Atletico Madrid, the Mexican never managed a win over Barca, whilst with Real Madrid he recorded
four wins and three draws over Barca, losing on six occasions.
First meeting as managers
The game this Sunday will be the first time that Pep and Hugo have met as managers. Sanchez
took over at Almeria from Gonzalo Arconada after the 17th round of games this season and with him
in charge, Almeria have been unbeaten at home.
