Barça v Bayern: Did you know?
Roger Bogunyà
Barça and Bayern meet on Wednesday evening in the first leg of the CL quarterfinal ties. A look at the European records of the two sides throws up some interesting facts and figures.
- Barça have never beaten Bayern in a competitive European match. Four previous meetings have ended
in three defeats and just one draw.
- However, recently, Barça has done well against German teams. Of the last eleven matches,
Barça have won ten.
- In total, Barça have won 25 times against German opposition, drawn 9 and lost 11. If we
just look at the home matches, Barça have won 15, drawn one and lost 5.
-
- Bayern’s record away from home against Spanish teams is not good: 4
wins, 4 draws and 8 defeats.
- The last time Bayern played a team from the Spanish league was a year ago. They eliminated
Getafe (3-3) in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup after losing 3-1 with just five minutes to go in
the match.
- The last three times that Bayern have reached the quarterfinals they have been eliminated -
2002, 2005 and 2007.
- Barça have a better record in quarterfinals. Barça have gone through to the semis on 9
occasions out of 10 whereas Bayern have managed 12 out of 20.
- Tonight’s match in the Camp Nou will be between the two highest scorers in this
season’s competition – both sides have scored 24 goals so far.
- Of the eight teams remaining in the competition, Barça have conceded the most goals; 11,
not including the preliminary phase. They haven’t managed a clean sheet in any of this
season’s CL matches in the Camp Nou.
- Barça head the ranking of goal efforts with 68, 11 more than Bayern (57).
- It will be the fifth meeting between Guardiola and Klinsmann but the first as coaches. In
the four previous matches as players, Klinsmann has been unable to beat Guardiola.
- One of Bayern’s leading players, Mark van Bommel,
played for Barça in the league and Champions League winning 2005-06 season. He is one of four
players who are one yellow card away from a suspension.
- Márquez, Sergio Busquets and Borowski will miss the second leg in the Allianz Arena if they
receive a yellow card tonight.
- Borowski already knows what it feels like to score but end up on the losing side in the
Camp Nou when he came here with Werder Bremen in the 2005-06 season (3-1). He returned the
following season with the (now) injured Miroslav Klose and lost again (2-0).
- Icelandic international Gudjohnsen was part of the Chelsea team that eliminated Bayern in
the quarterfinals of the 2004-05 Champions League. Chelsea had already eliminated Barça in the
previous round.
- Thierry Henry is one goal away from a total of 50 in the Champions League.
- Bayern is one goal away from conceding 350 in all UEFA competitions.
- Franck Ribery tops the ranking of goal assists in this year’s competition –
six.
