Messi has already scored in the Allianz Arena
Edgar Fornós
The only game Barça have ever played in the Allianz Arena ended in a one nil win. The goal was scored by Leo Messi, who had just come back to the team after playing in the Copa América.
The Argentine striker found the net as Barça took on Bayern Munich in the first edition of the
Franz Beckenbauer Cup in August 2007. Barcelona, then managed by Frank Rijkaard, beat the Germans
0-1.
Great goal
The move for the goal was started by current Chelsea player Deco, who did a wall pass with
Henry before whipping the ball into the box. The German defence failed to clear enabling Messi to
smash home a fine volley.
Tribute
The first edition of the Franz Beckenbauer trophy also featured a tribute to legendary Bayern
Munich star Mehmet Scholl. In his 15 seasons in a Bayern shirt, the midfielder’s silverware
included the Champions League, the UEFA Cup and eight German League titles. Barça then rather
rained on his parade by winning the game.
First a friendly, now a quarter final return leg
The game Barça played away at Bayern Munich in August 2007 was a preseason friendly, whereas this
week’s clash is a Champions League quarter final second leg. Even though Barça go into the
game with a 4-0 advantage, who finally makes it to the semi-finals will be decided on the pitch at
the Allianz Arena.
